Trends move fast. They also leave fast. And if your entire content strategy is built on jumping from one to the next, you will spend years being busy without ever building anything that actually lasts.
What trend-chasing costs you:
Every time you pivot to a new trend, you start over in some way: new format, new style, new angle, new energy. You never build the depth of consistency in one lane that turns a follower into a believer. You never develop the clear, recognizable point of view that makes someone say I know exactly whose content this is before I even see the name.
The creators who build something durable are rarely the ones who catch the most trends. They're the ones who built something so clear and consistent that people point newcomers toward them; trend or no trend, algorithm or no algorithm.
What to build instead:
A defined message. A recognisable voice. A consistent point of view about a specific problem for a specific person. A body of work that means something even when it's not the format of the moment.
That's not built in a viral moment. It's built in the months and years of showing up with the same conviction, the same clarity, the same commitment to serving the same person, regardless of what's trending that week.
Trends as a tool, not a strategy:
This doesn't mean ignore trends entirely. It means use them in the service of what you're already building, not as the building itself. A trend can be a vehicle for delivering your message in a format that's currently getting attention. The moment the trend becomes the message rather than the vehicle, you've handed your strategy over to something you don't control.
The shoreline vs. the wave:
You don't need to catch every wave. You need to build the shoreline that people keep washing up on, the place that exists and has value regardless of which wave brought them there. Build that.
Your action step:
Identify the one thing at the centre of your brand that doesn't depend on a trend to be valuable. Put your energy there this week instead of chasing the current format everyone is using.
