The Hardest Part of Marriage Isn't Finding the Right Person. It's Becoming One.

Everyone goes into marriage focused on finding the right person. Almost nobody goes in fully prepared for what comes after the long, daily, relentless work of becoming one.

What becoming one actually means:

It doesn't mean losing yourself. It doesn't mean two people merging into an indistinct unit where nobody has their own identity or perspective anymore.

It means building something together that neither person could have built alone: a shared life, a shared language, a shared understanding of each other deep enough that you can navigate the hardest seasons without losing the thread that connects you.

That doesn't happen automatically. It happens through thousands of small decisions — to be honest, when comfortable silence would be easier, to grow toward each other when growing apart would take less effort, to stay curious about each other when familiarity makes assumption the path of least resistance.

Why this work is harder than it sounds:

Two people enter a marriage with completely different histories, different wounds, and different definitions of what love, safety, and success look like. Making a life together that actually works for both people requires constant, intentional negotiation of those differences; not once, in the beginning, but ongoing, for as long as the marriage lasts.

The couples who make it aren't the ones who happened to be compatible enough that this was easy. They're the ones who chose the work consistently, even when easy wasn't an option.

Where becoming one actually happens:

Not in the easy seasons. Not in the honeymoon phase or the seasons where everything is going well, and the relationship feels natural and effortless.

Becoming one happens in the seasons that force a choice; will we grow together through this or apart from it? The answer to that question, made over and over across the years of a marriage, is what determines whether two people eventually become one.

Your challenge:

Name one way you and your spouse are currently growing, toward each other or away from each other. Then make one decision this week that moves you toward.
