At some point, a lot of us started measuring our marriages by ease instead of strength, and that is a dangerous scale to use.
Easy is a poor measure of a marriage because the seasons that build the most strength are almost never the easy ones. Easy seasons feel good. They are not where growth happens. They are not where you learn who you really are as a partner, or how deep your commitment actually runs, or what you're capable of building when the cost is real.
What hard seasons are actually doing:
A hard season in a marriage is not evidence of failure. It is evidence of two real human beings in a real relationship navigating real life, and the friction of that navigation, when faced instead of fled, is what produces strength.
Hard seasons teach you how to fight without causing damage. How to forgive before it feels fully earned. How to love someone well when they are the hardest version of themselves to love. None of that is learned in easy seasons. All of it is essential to a marriage that lasts.
The refining process:
Think of the hard seasons in your marriage less as obstacles and more as refinement. The same way metal is strengthened by heat and pressure, a marriage is strengthened by the seasons that require something real from both people.
That doesn't make the hard seasons easy to endure. It makes them worth enduring because what comes out on the other side of a hard season faced together is a marriage that both people know is real.
Changing the question:
Most people in a hard marriage season ask: Why is this so hard? The better question is: What is this building in me? What is this building in us? That shift in perspective doesn't eliminate the difficulty, but it changes what you do with it.
Your challenge:
If you're in a hard season, resist the urge to run from it or resolve it quickly just to restore comfort. Ask what it's trying to build. Then do the work of building it.
Fighting through a hard season? You don't have to do it alone:
