Your Content Isn't Too Long. Your First Line Is Too Weak.

  • 0

Creators spend hours writing content and seconds on the first line. That ratio is backwards. Because no matter how valuable the rest of your post is, it means nothing if the opening line doesn't give the reader a compelling reason to keep going. The hook isn't where you warm up. It's the entire pitch.

Why the First Line Decides Everything

On any social media platform, the reader makes a split-second decision about whether to keep reading based almost entirely on the first sentence. They're not yet invested in you, your topic, or your point. They're just deciding whether there's a reason to slow down. If your first line doesn't create curiosity, call someone out, or say something they've never heard quite that way — they move on.

The Three Types of Hooks That Work

The bold claim: says something specific and slightly surprising that creates instant curiosity. The called-out pain: names a specific struggle so precisely that the right reader feels personally addressed. The open loop: starts a story or makes a statement that can't be resolved without reading further. Every high-performing hook falls into at least one of these categories.

What Weak Hooks Look Like

Today I want to talk about...'  tells the reader nothing worth stopping for. 'As a content creator, you know that...' — assumes investment they haven't given yet. 'Here are some tips for...' — signals generic content before delivering it. These openers aren't wrong because they're long or short — they're wrong because they give the reader no reason to care.

A Simple Test Before You Post

Read only the first line of your post. Ask: if I saw this on someone else's account and knew

nothing about them, would I stop and read the rest? If the honest answer is no, rewrite the first line before you change anything else.
